MgO:LiNbO3 Crystal Description

Magnesium-doped Lithium Niobate (MgO:LiNbO₃) crystals are a modified version of the traditional LiNbO₃ (LN) crystal, which is widely used in nonlinear optics, electro-optics, and acousto-optics. One of the major drawbacks of pure LiNbO₃ is its susceptibility to photorefractive damage, which occurs under exposure to continuous wave (CW) blue or green light, resulting in optically induced changes in the refractive index. This phenomenon limits the application of LiNbO₃ in high-power laser systems.

To mitigate this issue, MgO doping (typically around 5 mol% for congruent LiNbO₃) has been used to enhance the photorefractive damage threshold. MgO-doping significantly reduces the susceptibility of the crystal to optical damage and provides a much lower coercive field value compared to undoped LiNbO₃. Interestingly, stoichiometric LiNbO₃ crystals doped with only 1 mol% MgO have demonstrated even higher photorefractive damage thresholds than the 5 mol% doped congruent samples, making it a promising alternative for specific applications.

In addition to improving the photorefractive damage threshold, MgO doping influences a range of physical properties of LiNbO₃ crystals. These include transition temperature, activation energy, optical band gap, optical absorption spectra, and the shift of OH⁻ vibration frequencies, among others. Studies show that the threshold composition for MgO doping in LiNbO₃, which optimizes these properties, lies just above 5 mol%.
